Jimi Hendrix's show at the Community Theater in Berkeley on May 30, 1970 has always been the stuff of legends.

Although much of the performance has been bootlegged to within an inch of its life, it wasn't until 2003 that the second show of the evening was officially released. Mainly because it has remained in high demand, Music On Vinyl decided to re-release the album on 180 gram audiophile vinyl.

His signature songs "Hey Joe", "Foxy Lady", "Purple Haze" and "Voodoo Child" sound absolutely stunning, but it's Jimi's solo on "Stone Free" and the tracks "I Don't Live Today" and "Machine Gun" that take you into the stratosphere.

Paul Simon packed his case and his guitar, and moved to England in 1964, playing the folk clubs and coffee houses in London and beyond. Coming into contact with the aspirant English and Scottish folkies such as Bert Jansch, Davy Graham et al, Simon knew he had to be on top of his game. Famously, he also recorded his solo debut, 1965's The Paul Simon Songbook, at Levy's Recording Studio, situated at 73 New Bond Street. Produced by Reginald Warburton and Stanley West, that auspicious moment included "I Am A Rock," "The Sound Of Silence," "A Most Peculiar Man" and "Patterns": all gorgeous examples of folk-rock that would soon be revived and improved in Simon and Garfunkel.

Legendary songwriter, recording artist and performer Paul Simon will release his 14th studio album – In The Blue Light – on September 7.  Produced by Simon and Roy Halee, who have worked together since the 1960s, the album features a talented cast of musicians who have joined Simon to lend fresh perspectives on 10 of the artist's favourite (though perhaps less-familiar) songs, drawn from his unparalleled body of work.

Revisiting his repertoire, Simon has selected songs originally appearing on There Goes Rhymin' Simon (1973),  Still Crazy After All These Years (1975),One-Trick Pony (1980), Hearts and Bones (1983), The Rhythm of The Saints (1990), You're The One (2000) and So Beautiful Or So What (2011), refreshing and transforming the compositions through new arrangements and collaborations.

Among the many musicians joining Simon on In The Blue Light are jazz icons trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, guitarist Bill Frisell, and drummers Jack DeJohnette and Steve Gadd.  Two of the compositions recorded with the New York-based chamber ensemble sextet yMusic, “Can’t Run But” and “Rene and Georgette Magritte with Their Dog After the War,” are being brought to the stage each night as show-stopping highlights on Simon’sHomeward Bound – The Farewell Tour.

GRACELAND – THE REMIXES (2LP)

GRACELAND – THE REMIXES (2LP)

by Paul Simon
$54.99

Acclaimed as one of the most iconic records in rock and roll history, Paul Simon’s GRAMMY-winning 1986 album GRACELAND has received a special 2018 reworking with the likes of MK, Richy Ahmed, Paul Oakenfold, and Groove Armada all spinning their own unique interpretations across the release. Significantly, this is the first time a classic album has been reimagined in its complete entirety.

The project, consisting of 12 remixes from a range of artists representing a wide array of styles from Deep House, Afro House, DnB, Tech House, and many more, was overseen by producer and project curator Michael Gaiman, AKA The Duke of New York.

Having sold over 16 million copies worldwide, GRACELAND became a legendary production with Paul Simon sampling diverse sounds and World Music styles, creating an eclectic mixture of pop, rock, African Zulu isicathamiya, and mbaqanga dance styles.

A celebration of GRACELAND’S impact on world music, the release marks 32 years since the album introduced a diverse cast of musicians, including the bold use of native South African performers at a time when the Western world had boycotted them due to the apartheid that threatened to tear the country apart. Exposing audiences to the notion of “world music” from diverse corners of the globe, this cultural exchange eventually created a through-line to contemporary electronic music, the cornerstones of which involve capturing and sampling other instruments, field sounds and recordings to create bold, alternative compositions.

“To say it was an honour to mix one of Paul Simon’s tracks is an understatement,” said Richy Ahmed, referring to his thunderous remix of ‘The Boy In The Bubble’. “It is one of my favourite tracks ever.”

“What do you say when someone asks you to remix a classic? Well normally, No!” laughs Andy of Groove Armada. “It’s a rule we’ve managed to follow for 20 years. Until we got a call about remixing a track from GRACELAND. Here was an album…which had opened our ears to a new world of sound. We decided to break the rule because we could choose a tune. In [“You Can Call Me Al”] was a horn riff which we’d been dropping in our sets ever since we tried it at Fais Do-Do’s Ballroom in LA back in 1998 and it created an electric moment of dancefloor unity. So the remix wrote itself and our ace-in-the-pack Horn Drop is now public property.”

Miles Ahead (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) (Vinyl)

The release of the movie ‘Miles Ahead’, Don Cheadle's wildly entertaining and moving exploration of Miles Davis, will be accompanied by this new soundtrack featuring musical highlights from Miles' career and new recordings overseen by Grammy Award-winning jazz/hip-hop artist Robert Glasper.  This is a perfect primer on Davis' career for the new fan and a brilliant audio keepsake of the film for those who've studied his works inside and out. Pressed on 2LP, 180gram vinyl in a gatefold sleeve, the album features 11 tracks from across Miles' catalogue from 1956 to 1981, select dialogue from the film featuring Cheadle in character, and five original compositions written, co-written, produced or performed exclusively for ‘Miles Ahead’ by Robert Glasper. These cues include "What's Wrong with That?" a jam that closes the movie imagining Cheadle as Miles playing in the present day with guest performers Glasper, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Gary Clark, Jr. and Esperanza Spalding; plus ‘Gone 2015’, an end-credits song featuring guest verses from rapper Pharoahe Monch. Cheadle also pens new liner notes for the album discussing the selection and creation of the songs on the soundtrack.

Leonard Cohen, the most elegant Canadian bard, whispers his way through his 2004 album “Dear Heather” like a poet quietly musing over his life  and loves. The mellow, hushed, and somewhat nocturnal character of the album commands attention through Cohen's deep baritone and Sharon Robinson's clear vocals.   It's an intimate album that celebrates lost loves and friendships instead of mourning them, an introspective look on life from a ripe old age (Cohen turned 70 when the album was released).

Leonard Cohen is indubitably one of the most legendary and successful singer-songwriters from the 60's. However, his label at first refused to release Various Positions, his seventh studio album, saying 'Look, Leonard; we know you're great, but we don't know if you're any good'.   The success of the album proved them wrong, giving us one of his most beloved and arguably his most covered song "Hallelujah", along other gems such as "Heart With No Companion" and the Gainsbourg-esque "Dance Me To The End Of Love".

What Happens Next (Vinyl) (2LP)

by Joe Satriani
$49.95

Joe Satriani’s 16th studio album is What Happens Next, a high-energy album that takes the legendary guitarist’s skills to exciting new heights.
The new instrumental album features a power trio of Satriani on guitar along with two Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees: Deep Purple/Black Country Communion bassist Glenn Hughes and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith, the latter reuniting with Satriani for the first time since their work in the supergroup Chickenfoot with former Van Halen vocalist and bassist Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony. This unparalleled rock rhythm section gives What Happens Next a depth of groove that sets it apart from Satriani’s other work.
Satriani once again teams up with producer/engineer/mixer Mike Fraser on What Happens Next. Fraser has recorded and mixed every AC/DC album since 1990’s The Razors Edge and has been a frequent collaborator with Satriani since the release of Crystal Planet in 1998, producing, engineering or mixing Satriani’s solo albums as well as both studio projects by Chickenfoot.
This 12-track album showcases Satriani’s gift for constant evolution and reinvention as a bandleader and composer of intricate guitar-driven rock. What Happens Next finds Satriani discovering sounds and textures never before heard from an instrument he has unquestionably mastered over his three-decade solo career.

FIRST RAYS OF THE NEW RISING SUN (Vinyl) (2LP)

“First Rays of the New Rising Sun”, first released in 1997, is an attempt to recreate the album Jimi Hendrix was working on at the time of his death in 1970, as close as is feasible to how he would have wanted it (based on recordings and notes he made during the last months of his life).  Tracks for this album ranged from finished to skeletal at the time of Hendrix's death. Much of the material had been recorded over the summer of 1970 at Jimi's just-completed Electric Lady Studios in New York City. “First Rays” was the first of a series posthumous albums with hiqh-quality sought-after rarities and other previously unreleased music, released by the Jimi Hendrix Estate.

Originally released in 1994, the Jimi Hendrix Blues album features 11 blues performances recorded by Jimi between 1966 and 1970 showcasing the guitarist's mastery of the 12-bar form. This double-LP audiophile edition of Blues is arguably the best packaged, richest sounding, most coherent post-mortem release from the Hendrix archives.

Framed by his 1967 acoustic 12-string rendition of "Hear My Train 'A Comin'" and a 1970 Trio performance of the same song, these 11 rough and ready tracks illustrate Hendrix's deep spiritual connections to his blues roots and his daring experimental take on the shape of future blues to come. And they've never sounded so vital, necessary or dynamic. This 2LP version will forever stand as the definitive-sounding, high-performance edition of this historic collection.

Sounds Of The Universe' is one of Depeche's lower-key albums, but not without explosive

or dramatic moments by any means. The sense of older styles and sounds, classic drum
machines, early synthesizers, a rumbling bass undercarriage, serves new purposes. On the
whole, 'Sounds Of The Universe' is a grower, relying on a few listens to fully take effect, but
when it does, it shows Depeche Mode are still able to combine pop-hook accessibility and
their own take on 'roots' music for an electronic age with sonic experimentation and
recombination - not bad for a band with almost three decades under its collective belt.

Columbia Records and Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment, will release Bob Dylan - Trouble No More - The Bootleg Series Vol. 13 / 1979-1981 on Friday, November 3.
The latest chapter in Columbia/Legacy's highly acclaimed Bob Dylan Bootleg Series showcases the music Dylan wrote and performed during one of the most surprising, controversial and inspired periods of his career.
As the 1970s ended and the 1980s began, Dylan responded to the changing of the decades with a three album trilogy--Slow Train Coming (1979), Saved (1980) and Shot of Love (1981)--of spirit-filled songs of praise, worship and devotion. These songs were as deeply personal and packed with poetics as any Dylan had ever written, but the force of conviction and power of faith evident in these performances baffled segments of Dylan's fanbase (just as Dylan's "going electric" had alienated folk purists in 1965).

The live concerts from this crucial epoch in Dylan's history contain some of the most intensely jubilant and transcendent performances of his career. Bob Dylan - Trouble No More - The Bootleg Series Vol. 13 / 1979-1981 offers fans and music lovers the opportunity to fully experience for the first time this extraordinary chapter in Bob Dylan's musical journey.
With the exception of "Ye Shall Be Changed," released in 1991 on The Bootleg Series, Vol. 1-3), none of the tracks on Trouble No More have been previously released. This collection debuts 14 previously unreleased songs and a multitude of unreleased live performances, rare studio outtakes and more.

Bob Dylan returns with his new studio album, 'Shadows In The Night,' a ten track, Jack Frost-produced album, featuring the first singe, "Full Moon & Empty Arms." The 36th studio set from Bob Dylan reveals the first new music from the Dylan since 2012's worldwide hit 'Tempest.'

Upon announcement of the album's forthcoming release, Bob Dylan commented, "It was a real privilege to make this album. I've wanted to do something like this for a long time but was never brave enough to approach 30-piece complicated arrangements and refine them down for a 5-piece band. That's the key to all these performances. We knew these songs extremely well. It was all done live. Maybe one or two takes. No overdubbing. No vocal booths. No headphones. No separate tracking, and, for the most part, mixed as it was recorded. I don't see myself as covering these songs in any way. They've been covered enough. Buried, as a matter a fact. What me and my band are basically doing is uncovering them. Lifting them out of the grave and bringing them into the light of day."
