    Sony Classical marks seventieth birthaday of Nelson Freire with a special original newly remastered jacket collection corresponding to the original LP releases, where 3 LPs appear here for the first time on CD, mastered from the original analogue tapes. It contains some of the Brazilian pianist’s earliest and most coveted recorded performances, many of which have been out of print for decades. These include four celebrated concerto collaborations with the legendary conductor Rudolf Kempe, the “Prix Edison” award winning Chopin op. 28 Préludes, and large-scale sonatas by Chopin, Liszt and Brahms.

    An enclosed booklet offers an essay by Jed Distler, a photographic retrospective, and full discographical information. Born in Boa Esperança, Brazil, Nelson Freire played his first recital at four. At fourteen he traveled to Vienna to study with Bruno Seidlhofer, and met his longtime friend and piano duo partner Martha Argerich. He began to concertize internationally, winning the first prize at the Lisbon Vianna da Motta International Competition in 1964 and the Dinu Lipatti medal in London. The list of world class orchestras and conductors with whom Freire has worked over the past four decades is a veritable who’s who of classical music luminaries.

    Byron Janis has been called one of the most exciting and dynamic American pianists to emerge on the post-war scene. All of his RCA recordings, dating from 1947 to 1959, are collected in the new 5-CD set. The performances include Beethoven sonatas (“bracing, virile interpretations [that] sound as fresh and modern today as they must have 60-plus years ago –, extensive Chopin and Liszt selections, as well as concertos by Schumann, Rachmaninoff (the First and Third), Liszt (Totentanz) and Strauss (Burleske) with the Chicago and Boston Symphony orchestras under Fritz Reiner and Charles Munch, all played with “steel-edged articulation, nervous energy, and gauntly singing lines” (

    Nikolaus Harnoncourt – The Complete Sony Recordings (61 CDs and 3 DVDs) brings together for the first time Harnoncourt’s complete recordings from 2002–2015 with his Concentus Musicus Wien, the Wiener Philharmonike, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and the Symphonieorchester des Bayrischen Rundfunks.

    The Sony Classical edition features his famous symphony recordings of Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven and Bruckner, alongside his celebrated performances of great choral works such as the Verdi, Brahms and Mozart Requiems and Haydn’s Die Schöpfung, as well as Mozart’s opera Zaide, Haydn’s Orlando paladino and Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess. Also included are previously authorized but unreleased recordings of J. S. Bach’s Cantatas Nos. 26 & 36, Beethoven’s Christus am Ölberge and Dvořák’s Stabat Mater.

    The set comes with a 136-pages coffee-table book featuring a newly written essay on Nikolaus Harnoncourt – musician, conductor and researcher – plus all of his own liner notes and interviews that came with the original releases.
