Miles Davis’ impact on the innovation and stylistic development of jazz could be heard and seen from the mid-'40s to the early '90s. Miles Davis At Newport 1955-1975: The Bootleg Series Vol. 4, the latest installment in Legacy Recordings’ multi-disc box sets devoted to rare live performances by the revolutionary trumpeter, chronicles that incredible evolution over two decades through the lens of the Newport Jazz Festival. Established in Newport, Rhode Island in 1954 and curated/promoted by jazz impresario/musician George Wein, the Newport Jazz Festival was instrumental to both the development and mainstreaming of jazz music in America as well as live music in a festival setting. From Woodstock to Bonnaroo and Monterey Pop to the Isle of Wight, the modern festival concept can trace its roots back to Wein’s vision.

Kind Of Blue (Vinyl)

Listed as one of the four most influential Jazz albums that happened to be released in 1959 (Dave Brubeck – Time Out & Charles Mingus –Ah Um among them), so much has been said and written about Miles Davis' Kind Of Blue, it's virtually impossible to summarize all the necessary info to the length of this page. We could simply list some facts (best sold Jazz album ever worldwide). We could try to explain why it's the best Jazz album ever made, but the music itself will do that to you. As Bill Evans said in the original liner notes for the record, the band did not play through any of these pieces prior to recording. Miles Davis laid out the themes before the tape rolled and the band improvised. The end results were fragile and wondrous. Recorded during 2 sessions in 1959, Kind of Blue worked on many different levels and will do so for many years to come.

The conception of Sketches Of Spain in 1960 can be placed in the 'most melodic era' of Miles Davis. It is one of his most accessible and less improvisational albums, some even outclassed it from the reigns of Jazz.  This is one of the four albums where Miles and Gil Evans (arranger & conductor) were together with a small orchestra of horns and percussion, and it was fueled by Spanish melodies that fascinated Davis to the point he needed to get into them and go beyond: "El Concierto de Arajuez" by Joaquín Rodrigo and "El Amor Brujo" by Manuel de Falla. Davis and Evans put something together that every single music lover should possess, a sketch of some place he'd never been to. As Miles said, ''It's music, and I like it".

Bitches Brew is a double album by Miles Davis, released in April 1970 on Columbia. The album continued his experimentation with electric instruments previously featured on his critically acclaimed In a Silent Way album. With the use of these instruments, such as the electric piano and guitar, Davis rejected traditional jazz rhythms in favor of a looser, rock-influenced improvisational style.

Bitches Brew was Davis's first gold record; it sold more than half a million copies. Upon release, it received a mixed response, due to the album's unconventional style and experimental sound. Later, Bitches Brew gained recognition as one of jazz's greatest albums and a progenitor of the jazz rock genre, as well as a major influence on rock and funk musicians. The album won a Grammy Award for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album in 1971.

Recorded at the end of a tumultuous decade (August 1969), Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew reflected the chaos and beauty of a society stretched (and stressed) to its breaking point.  This genre-bending, barrier-smashing double LP would become Miles’ first RIAA  gold album.
Bitches Brew is a tribute to both the man who changed the course of jazz (“four or five times,” as he himself once quipped), and the album that virtually single-handedly brought jazz into the commercial rock era, earning a place at #94 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time.
Two CDs containing the original 94-plus minutes of music with six bonus tracks , a live concert recording of one a Miles Davis concert, recorded in 1970, and a DVD of a previously unissued performance by Miles’ Quintet lineup with Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea, Dave Holland and Jack DeJohnette in Copenhagen, November 1969

Not only contains the album in gloriously warm remastered sound, it also features the complete studio sessions with a total of over two hours of false starts, alternate takes, dialogue, and studio sequences. All of this is on disc one. Disc two contains five tunes recorded in the studio by this sextet ten months earlier (May 26, 1958) that were not featured on Kind of Blue. The other bonus cut is a walloping 17-and-a-half minute live version of "So What", recorded by Miles with John Coltrane, Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, and Jimmy Cobb at a gig in Holland in 1960. This track has only appeared on bootlegs in the past and this is its first authorised release.

Amidst a demand for iconic records and resurgence of vinyl sales comes the Classic Album series, a 2CD product line focused on the jewels of the Sony Music catalogue.

Miles Ahead (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) (Vinyl)

The release of the movie ‘Miles Ahead’, Don Cheadle's wildly entertaining and moving exploration of Miles Davis, will be accompanied by this new soundtrack featuring musical highlights from Miles' career and new recordings overseen by Grammy Award-winning jazz/hip-hop artist Robert Glasper.  This is a perfect primer on Davis' career for the new fan and a brilliant audio keepsake of the film for those who've studied his works inside and out. Pressed on 2LP, 180gram vinyl in a gatefold sleeve, the album features 11 tracks from across Miles' catalogue from 1956 to 1981, select dialogue from the film featuring Cheadle in character, and five original compositions written, co-written, produced or performed exclusively for ‘Miles Ahead’ by Robert Glasper. These cues include "What's Wrong with That?" a jam that closes the movie imagining Cheadle as Miles playing in the present day with guest performers Glasper, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Gary Clark, Jr. and Esperanza Spalding; plus ‘Gone 2015’, an end-credits song featuring guest verses from rapper Pharoahe Monch. Cheadle also pens new liner notes for the album discussing the selection and creation of the songs on the soundtrack.
