Russel Morris / Sharkmouth (Vinyl)

by Russell Morris

'Sharkmouth' is the latest album from one of this country's greatest and most re-spected singer/songwriters, Russell Morris. The project was created after Russell had read about a 1920's Gangster from Sydney, Shark Jaws. This was the driving force behind a want to create an album including Australian characters from the 1920/30's era.

As producer (and bass player), Mitch Cairns, explains: "To our knowledge, most "Australiana" characters have been portrayed in a traditional colonial folk sense, so we wanted to find a way to deliver the stories in a more mainstream vein whilst still placing them in a "vintage era." A blues style seemed to be the perfect fit!! We tried to keep the vibe of the album raw and honest with lots of textural instruments and sounds, but above all, it had to be simple and spacious. We are also very honoured to have some very special guests on the album, including Troy Cassar-Daley, Mark Lizotte and Renee Geyer."

Tony Bennett & Bill Charlap / The Silver Lining - The Songs Of Jerome Kern (2LP)

Following the enormous success of his #1, Grammy-Award winning album with Lady Gaga, 'Cheek To Cheek,' 'The Silver Lining' continues the classic series of Tony Bennett album releases celebrating the essentials of the Great American Songbook. 'The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern' is an appreciation of the genius of Jerome David Kern (1885-1945), one of the 20th century's most important American composers of musical theater and popular music.

Tony Bennett is the only artist to successfully bridge the worlds of pop music and jazz on an international scale for over 60 years. 'The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern' become parts of a timeless legacy of recordings that Bennett has done throughout his career that have embraced both genres, in particular the revered piano jazz albums that he recorded with the late Bill Evans in 1975 and 1977.

Tony has become synonymous with the pop/jazz connection and in recent years has been a mentor to contemporary artists such as Lady Gaga and the late Amy Winehouse in encouraging them to embrace jazz music.

With his 90th birthday less than a year away, 'The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern' defines what makes Tony Bennett unique in the pantheon of great singers and is a testament to the legacy that he continues to create as a recording artist and influence in the music industry.

Miles Davis’ impact on the innovation and stylistic development of jazz could be heard and seen from the mid-'40s to the early '90s. Miles Davis At Newport 1955-1975: The Bootleg Series Vol. 4, the latest installment in Legacy Recordings’ multi-disc box sets devoted to rare live performances by the revolutionary trumpeter, chronicles that incredible evolution over two decades through the lens of the Newport Jazz Festival. Established in Newport, Rhode Island in 1954 and curated/promoted by jazz impresario/musician George Wein, the Newport Jazz Festival was instrumental to both the development and mainstreaming of jazz music in America as well as live music in a festival setting. From Woodstock to Bonnaroo and Monterey Pop to the Isle of Wight, the modern festival concept can trace its roots back to Wein’s vision.

Miles Davis / Kind Of Blue (Vinyl)

    by Miles Davis

Listed as one of the four most influential Jazz albums that happened to be released in 1959 (Dave Brubeck – Time Out & Charles Mingus –Ah Um among them), so much has been said and written about Miles Davis' Kind Of Blue, it's virtually impossible to summarize all the necessary info to the length of this page. We could simply list some facts (best sold Jazz album ever worldwide). We could try to explain why it's the best Jazz album ever made, but the music itself will do that to you. As Bill Evans said in the original liner notes for the record, the band did not play through any of these pieces prior to recording. Miles Davis laid out the themes before the tape rolled and the band improvised. The end results were fragile and wondrous. Recorded during 2 sessions in 1959, Kind of Blue worked on many different levels and will do so for many years to come.

Miles Davis / Sketches Of Spain (Vinyl)

The conception of Sketches Of Spain in 1960 can be placed in the 'most melodic era' of Miles Davis. It is one of his most accessible and less improvisational albums, some even outclassed it from the reigns of Jazz.  This is one of the four albums where Miles and Gil Evans (arranger & conductor) were together with a small orchestra of horns and percussion, and it was fueled by Spanish melodies that fascinated Davis to the point he needed to get into them and go beyond: "El Concierto de Arajuez" by Joaquín Rodrigo and "El Amor Brujo" by Manuel de Falla. Davis and Evans put something together that every single music lover should possess, a sketch of some place he'd never been to. As Miles said, ''It's music, and I like it".

And his reverential treatment ofåÊJimi Hendrix's "Little Wing," also included here, only reaffirms the league of guitar player Stevie Ray Vaughan resided in and his reputation as Jimi's definitive interpreter.

Miles Davis / Bitches Brew (2LP)

Miles Davis / Bitches Brew (2LP)

      by Miles Davis

Bitches Brew is a double album by Miles Davis, released in April 1970 on Columbia. The album continued his experimentation with electric instruments previously featured on his critically acclaimed In a Silent Way album. With the use of these instruments, such as the electric piano and guitar, Davis rejected traditional jazz rhythms in favor of a looser, rock-influenced improvisational style.

Bitches Brew was Davis's first gold record; it sold more than half a million copies. Upon release, it received a mixed response, due to the album's unconventional style and experimental sound. Later, Bitches Brew gained recognition as one of jazz's greatest albums and a progenitor of the jazz rock genre, as well as a major influence on rock and funk musicians. The album won a Grammy Award for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album in 1971.

Recorded at the end of a tumultuous decade (August 1969), Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew reflected the chaos and beauty of a society stretched (and stressed) to its breaking point.  This genre-bending, barrier-smashing double LP would become Miles’ first RIAA  gold album.
Bitches Brew is a tribute to both the man who changed the course of jazz (“four or five times,” as he himself once quipped), and the album that virtually single-handedly brought jazz into the commercial rock era, earning a place at #94 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time.
Two CDs containing the original 94-plus minutes of music with six bonus tracks , a live concert recording of one a Miles Davis concert, recorded in 1970, and a DVD of a previously unissued performance by Miles’ Quintet lineup with Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea, Dave Holland and Jack DeJohnette in Copenhagen, November 1969
